Tesla’s First Showroom in Mumbai | What Is a Frunk in Tesla Model Y? | Wheelkart

Last Sunday, I visited Tesla’s first showroom at Jio World Drive Mall, Mumbai.
There I saw the Tesla Model Y — one car’s front bonnet was open.
Inside it… extra space! 🤔

Most cars have boot space at the back, but Tesla had space in both front and back.
That made me curious — what do we call that front space?
Then I found the answer 👉 “Frunk” (Front + Trunk).

🧠 What Is a Frunk?

“Frunk” means Front Trunk — a small storage space in the front of the car.
It’s possible because electric cars don’t have engines. 🔋

The battery pack sits under the floor, so the front bonnet area stays empty — which Tesla smartly turns into extra storage.

This is one of the most talked-about Tesla innovations that shows how EV design uses space more effectively than traditional cars.

⚡ Why Electric Vehicles Have a Frunk

Electric vehicles (EVs) have a Frunk because:

  • There’s no big engine or gearbox in the front.
  • Batteries are placed below the floor.
  • The front space becomes an additional storage area.

✅ Seen in EVs like:

  • Tesla
  • Porsche Taycan
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5
  • Kia EV6
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E

These cars use EV-specific platforms, which allow engineers to design smarter interiors and maximize every inch of space.

🛠️ Why Petrol and Diesel Cars Don’t Have a Frunk

Petrol and diesel cars — also called ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles — already have their front area filled with:

  • Engine
  • Radiator
  • Gearbox

Since these take up all the available space, there’s no room left for a Frunk.
That’s why ICE vehicles only have rear boot storage.

🔄 Fun Fact: The Rear-Engine Cars

Some old rear-engine cars like the Porsche 911 and Volkswagen Beetle had small luggage space in front — technically, that’s also a Frunk! 😄

So while Frunks are common in modern EVs, the idea isn’t entirely new — it’s just redesigned for the electric era.

🇮🇳 What About Indian EVs?

Right now, Tata, MG, and Mahindra electric cars in India don’t have a Frunk. ❌

The reason is simple: most Indian EVs are built on converted petrol/diesel platforms, not on dedicated EV platforms.

So under the bonnet, space is filled with:

  • Motors
  • Cooling units
  • Radiators
  • Wiring harnesses and controllers

Because of this, there’s no free space left for an extra front trunk.
Future Indian EVs that are built on pure electric architectures might introduce the Frunk feature soon. ⚡🇮🇳

💡 Takeaway: Innovation by Design

Tesla isn’t just changing how cars move — it’s changing how cars are designed and engineered.

A simple yet powerful idea — turning unused space into storage — proves that innovation starts with rethinking basics.

Electric vehicles represent the perfect mix of clean energy, intelligent design, and practical innovation.
